Mary C. Hammock, 87, died Saturday, September 14, 2013, under the care of Hospice Savannah, surrounded by her family, and friends.
She was born December 17, 1925 in Hampton County, South Carolina to the late Horace and Lillie Hadwin Chassereau. She lived most of her life in Savannah and was a member of Southside Baptist Church for over 60 years. Mary retired from Southern Bell after 41 years of service. She then went on to work for the State Probation Department for more than 10 years and also the Chatham County Voter registration office for 18 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Red Hat Society. Mary was a big supporter of the Salvation Army and the Bethesda Home for Boys. She was also a member of Generation One of Memorial Health University Medical Center.
Mary loved life and especially enjoyed square, line, and ballroom dancing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, O. G. Hammock.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Robin Hammock of Savannah, a grandson, Matthew Hammock of Lafayette, Indiana, a sister, Dot Nix of Hampton, SC, nieces, Sandra Nix, of Augusta, GA, Kathleen Nix, of High Point, NC, Barbara Wilson Bobby, of Coppell, TX, nephew, Mike Nix of Lexington, SC, and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 16, 2013, at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Southside Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Hammock, Bobby Lindsey, Bobby Hall, Joe Nielubowicz, David Youmans, and Blake Martin.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Mary Sheehan Sunday School Class, and the staff of the Chatham County Voter Registration office, and Tag office.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416, or the Salvation Army, 3100 Montgomery Street, Savannah, GA 31405.
The family would like to thank the staff of John Wesley Villas, Candler Hospital 2nd floor, Hospice Savannah, and her many friends for their care and support.
